Putting Weight in the Saddle

Once the horse is used to the feeling of a saddle on his back, it is time to begin putting some weight in the saddle. Trent takes this part of the process very slowly, often taking a few days. He begins by placing his foot in the stirrup as if he was going to mount up. He then stands in the stirrup, but does not swing his leg over. Reaching over, Trent heavily pats the opposite side of the horse. This mimics the movement of swinging a leg over the side of the horse. However, Trent is in a better position to get off if the horse rears at the movement than if he was completely astride the horse.
This process is repeated on the other side. Trent continues to balance his weight in the saddle, not mounting yet, and pats the side of the horse. Once the horse is completely accustomed to Trent's weight in the stirrups, it is time to move to the next step.
